Event Brief
The Indian Esports Championship 2016 was a landmark initiative that reshaped the narrative of competitive gaming in India. Hosted at Phoenix Marketcity, Kurla, Mumbai, the event featured a massive ₹20 Lakh prize pool and spanned four months, blending online and offline formats to create a truly national-level gaming experience. With a total reach of over 2 million and 10,000+ impressions, the championship firmly positioned esports as a serious and growing phenomenon in the Indian entertainment landscape.
Divided into three phases — The Uprising, Proving Grounds, and Ground Zero — the championship was designed to discover, nurture, and reward gaming talent across the country while simultaneously educating audiences and families about the legitimacy of gaming as a career.
Execution
The journey began with The Uprising, a large-scale online tournament that drew participation from every corner of India. Gamers competed across popular titles, with the top teams moving on to the next phase.
In the Proving Grounds, select teams battled it out in a month-long league that tested skill, coordination, and consistency. This filtered the country’s best talent into the final stage — Ground Zero, a three-day LAN spectacle in Mumbai that became the talk of the Indian esports scene.
Ground Zero delivered high-octane action across Counter-Strike: Global Offensive and Dota 2, with the top 8 teams competing in front of a live audience of 3,500. The event was elevated with immersive venue design, professional broadcast setups, and seamless production.
Adding a unique industry touch, Cafe Warz — a special competition for gaming cafés — celebrated the grassroots of India’s gaming culture. Immortals Café took home the title, representing the community spirit that powers Indian esports.
Each evening closed with live performances by popular artists like Lost Stories, Anish Sood, and Navraj Hans, bringing the perfect balance of entertainment and energy to the championship.
Team Essence Transmedia was the driving force behind the championship’s conceptualization and execution. From creating the IP identity, curating audience education modules (like sessions for parents of gamers), to end-to-end on-ground production, Essence played a crucial role in not just executing an event, but building a movement.
